Grammy-nominated artist Angie Stone, renowned as the lead singer of the pioneering hip-hop trio The Sequence and a celebrated R&B icon, passed away on Saturday following a car accident while traveling to Alabama.

Stone’s record label, SRG/ILS, confirmed her passing in a statement on its website, expressing deep sorrow.

“Angie was a Hip Hop and R&B legend. Her presence and artistry will truly be missed,” the label stated. “We send our condolences to her family, friends, and fans as we remember the legacy of Angie Stone.”

Music producer Walter Millsap III told The Associated Press via email that Stone was involved in a tragic crash early Saturday morning.

“Unfortunately, at around 4 a.m., while heading back to Atlanta from Alabama, the Sprinter flipped over and was subsequently hit by a big rig,” Millsap III said. “Thankfully, all survived except for Angie.”

Stone’s musical journey began in the late 1970s when Sugar Hill Records signed The Sequence, featuring Stone alongside Cheryl “Cheryl The Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondy” Chisolm. The trio, then high school students, made history with their 1979 hit “Funk You Up,” widely regarded as the first release by an all-female rap group. The Sequence went on to release three studio albums: Sugarhill Presents the Sequence, The Sequence, and The Sequence Party.

In the 1990s, Stone became a member of the R&B group Vertical Hold before launching a successful solo career. Over the years, she released 10 studio albums, including Black Diamond (1999), Mahogany Soul (2001), and The Art of Love & War (2007). Her contributions to music earned her three Grammy nominations, including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2005.

Beyond music, Stone also found success in acting. She made her film debut in the 2002 comedy The Hot Chick and took on the role of Big Mama Morton in the Broadway musical Chicago in 2003.

Her impact on hip-hop, R&B, and entertainment leaves a lasting legacy, cherished by fans worldwide.
