WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders have agreed to acquire wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fifth-round pick, pending a physical, according to a source familiar with the deal.

The source, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday, noted that the trade cannot be finalized until the new league year begins on March 12. Multiple reports have also confirmed the deal via NFL Network.

Samuel, who turned 29 last month, adds another dynamic weapon to Washington’s offense, complementing star receiver Terry McLaurin. His arrival provides reigning rookie of the year quarterback Jayden Daniels with an additional target heading into his second NFL season. Last year with the 49ers, Samuel recorded 51 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns.

The Commanders, who reached the NFC Championship Game before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, entered the offseason with one of the league’s highest salary cap spaces. General manager Adam Peters has now allocated part of that to Samuel, who signed a three-year contract extension with San Francisco in 2022 that runs through next season.

Since debuting with the 49ers in 2019, the South Carolina product has amassed 334 receptions, 4,792 yards, and 22 touchdowns. Samuel requested a trade following a season-ending meeting with coach Kyle Shanahan, leading the 49ers to grant him and his agent permission to explore options last month.

While San Francisco fielded trade inquiries for Samuel last offseason, no offers met their expectations. Although general manager John Lynch had publicly stated that the team was not actively looking to move the former All-Pro, the trade ultimately materialized following a dip in Samuel’s production since his standout 2021 season.
