Local authorities reported that four other people were injured in the early-morning attack on the Ukrainian capital, including a 9-year-old child.
Feb. 12, 2025, 4:22 PM GMT+6KYIV, Ukraine — A Russian missile barrage before dawn on Wednesday struck the Ukrainian capital, killing at least one civilian and injuring four others, igniting several fires in the city of three million, according to Ukrainian officials.
The capital was rocked by a series of powerful explosions around 4:30 a.m. local time (9:30 p.m. Tuesday ET), with local authorities reporting that air defenses were actively trying to intercept the missiles.
“This Russian terror against Ukraine will not stop on its own,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after the attack, calling for unity among international partners to bring a just end to the war.
“Putin is not preparing for peace — he continues to kill Ukrainians and destroy cities.” As the conflict nears its third year, there are signs of potential peace talks, particularly after former President Donald Trump revealed he had been in contact with both Kyiv and Moscow. Zelenskyy also stated on Tuesday that Ukraine would soon begin talks with U.S. officials.
Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down six of the seven ballistic missiles launched during the assault. Of the 123 drones involved, 71 were shot down, and electronic countermeasures were likely used to disable 40 others. Photos from state emergency services showed rescue teams battling flames engulfing a non-residential building in the area around Kyiv, though no casualties were reported there.
