At least seven police officers were injured during a lengthy standoff after responding to a "suicide in progress" call in San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday night.
The suspect, a man in his 40s, initially shot an officer who arrived at the scene of the apartment in the Stone Oak area. He then barricaded himself inside the apartment, continuing to fire on six more officers, according to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). Fortunately, none of the officers' injuries were life-threatening, police confirmed.
SAPD later reported that the suspect was found dead, though it remains unclear whether he died from a self-inflicted wound or was shot by officers.
Authorities evacuated residents from the apartment building when possible, as reported by NBC affiliate WOAI. SAPD Chief William P. McManus provided an update in a Facebook video, explaining, "SWAT arrived on the scene, and the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment for several hours. At the end of the event, the suspect was found to be deceased, but we don’t know if he died from a self-inflicted wound or was shot by officers."
Neighbor Joseph Loredo, who spoke to WOAI, recalled hearing a loud pop while studying, followed by the sounds of helicopters and additional gunshots. He saw an officer with a leg injury being treated with a tourniquet before witnessing the suspect open fire on police.
