Nuna Baby Essentials Issues Recall for Over 600,000 RAVA Car Seats Due to Harness Problem

The Nuna RAVA car seat recall affects models made from July 16, 2016, to Oct. 25, 2023.

Nuna Baby Essentials has recalled over 600,000 RAVA car seats due to a potential safety hazard where debris may prevent the harness from staying properly tightened. This recall affects RAVA models produced between July 16, 2016, and October 25, 2023. In these seats, debris can get lodged near the front harness adjuster button, interfering with its ability to securely fasten the strap.

A loose harness can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash, as it may fail to adequately restrain the occupant, according to Nuna's website.

RAVA models made after October 25, 2023, are not part of the recall, as these have a fabric covering over the harness adjusters instead of plastic.

Customers with affected car seats are not required to dispose of or return them. Instead, Nuna is offering a free remedy kit, which includes a new seat pad, cleaning kit, and instructions on how to maintain the harness adjuster’s cleanliness. The kit can be ordered via Nuna's website, and it also contains guidance on how to check if the harness is functioning correctly. If the harness is still working properly, the seat can continue to be used as directed.

Nuna, known for its premium baby products like strollers and car seats, has labeled the recall a “proactive step.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed that no injuries or fatalities have been reported related to the recalled seats, which total 608,786 units.

Pediatrician Dr. Alisa Baer, co-founder of The Car Seat Lady, emphasized that snug car seat straps are vital for safety, as they reduce movement during a crash. She noted that any debris in a car seat’s harness adjuster, not just the Nuna brand, can compromise its function. She recommended parents clean the harness adjuster regularly using a dry brush or toothbrush and check that the straps are tight and secure.
