SYDNEY — A female swimmer has tragically died following a shark attack in waters off a popular tourist destination on Australia’s east coast, authorities confirmed.

Emergency responders were called to Woorim Beach on Bribie Island, located about 50 miles north of Brisbane, around 5 p.m. (1 a.m. ET) on Monday after reports of a serious shark bite incident, according to Queensland state police.

"The female was swimming when she was attacked by a shark. She suffered life-threatening injuries and tragically succumbed to them," a police spokesperson said in an email. The victim's age was not officially released, though local media widely identified her as a 17-year-old girl.

Christopher Potter, a local resident, noted that the beach is often used by swimming groups throughout the day.

"People know there are many sharks around Bribie, but this close to the shore, it's still a shock," he told ABC News.
