The recall was initiated because of a defect in the cans' "easy open" pull lid, which could result in leakage or potential contamination from clostridium botulinum.

A voluntary recall has been issued for certain canned tuna products sold at major retailers like Trader Joe's, Walmart, and Costco due to a defect in the pull tab that could lead to botulism poisoning, a potentially fatal condition.
Tri-Union Seafoods has recalled select lots of tuna products, including brands such as Genova, Van Camp’s, Trader Joe’s, and H-E-B. The recall was announced after the company identified a manufacturing issue with the “easy open” pull tab, which may compromise the product’s seal, increasing the risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This bacterium can lead to botulism, a rare but severe illness that affects the nervous system, causing symptoms like muscle paralysis, difficulty breathing, and even death.
Consumers who have purchased the affected products are advised not to use them, even if the product seems unaffected by spoilage. The recalled items were sold under the H-E-B label in Texas and the Trader Joe’s label in various states, including Delaware, Illinois, and New York. Genova tuna cans were available at Costco stores in Florida and Georgia, and other retailers like Harris Teeter, Walmart, Safeway, and Kroger in multiple states also sold affected products. A list of the specific can codes and “Best If Used By” dates for the impacted items has been provided.
While no illnesses have been reported so far, consumers who feel unwell after consuming the product should seek immediate medical attention. Affected products can be returned to the retailer for a full refund, discarded, or exchanged by contacting Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and replacement coupon.
