A manhunt is underway for two suspected gunmen who escaped into the subway tunnels of Brussels following a shooting on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office to NBC News.
Police responded to reports of gunfire near the Clemenceau subway station in central Brussels around 6 a.m. local time (12:00 a.m. ET). Surveillance footage captured images of the two suspects, prompting a large-scale search operation. Authorities recovered several shell casings at the scene, and multiple subway stations were temporarily closed, with six transit lines experiencing service disruptions, the Belgian public transportation service STIB reported on X.
No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made so far. The prosecutor’s office stated that the investigation is ongoing and that there is no indication of a terrorist motive.
