A 5-year-old dies in an explosion inside a hyperbaric chamber in Michigan.
The chamber was filled with 100% oxygen, making it highly flammable.
A 5-year-old boy tragically lost his life, and his mother was injured when a hyperbaric chamber exploded at a medical facility in Troy, Michigan, on Friday.
The chamber, which contained 100% oxygen, was highly flammable, as explained by Lt. Keith Young of the Detroit Fire Department. Emergency responders arrived shortly before 8 a.m. to find the boy deceased at the scene. His mother, who was standing next to the chamber when it exploded, sustained injuries to her arms. A few medical staff members were also present but escaped with minor injuries.
The exact reason for the boy's treatment at the facility remains unclear, but officials confirmed the explosion was confined to the chamber, and firefighters swiftly controlled the fire.
Lt. Young, with 10 years of experience, stated, "We've never responded to anything like this." The cause of the explosion is under investigation, with multiple state agencies looking into safety protocols at the facility. The medical center is currently closed while the investigation continues.
