The 82nd Golden Globe Awards officially kick off Hollywood's awards season this Sunday, offering a more relaxed alternative to the Oscars and honoring achievements in both film and television.
Here’s a preview of what to expect from this year's "Hollywood’s Party of the Year."
How to Watch The Golden Globe Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday and air live on CBS at 8 p.m. ET. The broadcast will also stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. (CBS acquired the rights in November 2023, replacing NBC). NBC News staff will provide live updates on NBCNews.com.
Who’s Hosting? Emmy- and Grammy-nominated comedian Nikki Glaser will host the ceremony for the first time, making history as the first woman to host solo. In recent years, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted four times, and Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg shared hosting duties in 2019.
Glaser told the Golden Globes website that hosting the show is “scary” but exciting. “It’s a well-lit room, which is not conducive to comedy; there are a lot of people I admire, which also isn’t conducive to comedy. It’s live, so you can’t do retakes,” she said. “The level of difficulty is through the roof, and that’s thrilling to me.”
Glaser is fresh off a successful year, including her second HBO stand-up special, Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die, and a notable appearance on Netflix’s The Roast of Tom Brady.
What Are the Film Front-Runners? Unlike the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes split the best film award into two categories: drama and musical/comedy. This gives voters the chance to recognize a broader array of films, with six nominees in each category.
Gold Derby editors predict that drama contenders like The Brutalist, Conclave, and Dune: Part Two have strong odds. Meanwhile, in the musical/comedy category, Anora and Wicked are seen as top contenders. Other films vying for recognition include A Complete Unknown, Nickel Boys, September 5, and Challengers.
The most-nominated film this year is Emilia Pérez, a genre-defying musical about a Mexican cartel boss undergoing gender-affirming surgery and embracing a new life as an anti-violence advocate. The Netflix film earned 10 nominations.
What About Blockbusters? A new category introduced last year, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, recognizes films that have resonated with global audiences. Last year’s recipient was Barbie. This year, nominees include Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Gladiator II, among others. Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine were the top domestic box office hits of 2024, but Wicked could be a strong contender as well.
What Are the TV Front-Runners? The Globes also honor TV achievements. In the drama series category, Shōgun has strong momentum after winning the same award at the recent Emmys. Other nominees include The Day of the Jackal, The Diplomat, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, and Squid Game.
In comedy series, Hacks is favored after its recent Emmy win, with other nominees like Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and Only Murders in the Building competing for the honor.
Historic Nominations Karla Sofía Gascón, star of Emilia Pérez, made history as the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for a Globe for a leading film role. If she wins, it would be a significant LGBTQ+ milestone. Other nominees in the best musical/comedy actress category include Amy Adams, Cynthia Erivo, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Zendaya.
Denzel Washington, nominated for his supporting role in Gladiator II, enters the show as the most-nominated Black performer in Golden Globe history, with 11 career nods.
Who’s Presenting? A star-studded group of presenters includes Andrew Garfield, Anya Taylor-Joy, Awkwafina, Colin Farrell, Dwayne Johnson, Glenn Close, Jennifer Coolidge, Michelle Yeoh, Mindy Kaling, Nicolas Cage, Salma Hayek Pinault, Viola Davis, and Zoë Kravitz, among many others.
Who Will Get Special Recognition? Two major industry figures will receive special honors. Ted Danson will be presented with the Carol Burnett Award for his "outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen." Viola Davis, an elite EGOT winner, will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment." Past recipients of the DeMille Award include Eddie Murphy, Jane Fonda, and Oprah Winfrey.
