2011: The Start of Their Relationship

Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena began dating in 2011 after meeting during a game of Balderdash. While they didn’t share many details about the early days of their romance, Plaza revealed that their shared love of movies was an instant bond.

“We’re so obsessed with movies,” Aubrey told Page Six in 2017. “That’s why we’re making movies together.”

2014: Their First Collaboration - Life After Beth

It took three years for them to collaborate professionally, with Life After Beth marking their first movie together. The film also served as Jeff’s directorial debut.

2019: A Glimpse into Their Relationship

Although Aubrey and Jeff kept their relationship largely private, Aubrey shared in 2019 that being with someone in the same industry had its benefits.

“When you're with someone in your field, they understand what you're going through on a deeper level,” she explained to People. “You’re able to support each other and really understand the journey we’re both on.”

But she also acknowledged that balancing personal and professional life takes work.

“Working with your partner can always be challenging. There’s a lot of things we do separately, and I think it’s all about balance.”

2021: Marriage Confirmation

After a decade of being together, Aubrey confirmed she and Jeff had married when she gave him a special shoutout on social media in May 2021. She also teased their fourth film together, Spin Me Round.

“So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to Italia to cause some more trouble,” she wrote. “Excited to be reunited with the amazing @alisonbrie (who also co-wrote this one!) and @theofficialsuperstar @sordociego @lauren_weedman and so many more fun people in this. Preparati!!”

2022: Jeff Reflects on Their Partnership

By 2022, Jeff made it clear that his admiration for Aubrey went beyond just being her husband.

“She’s awesome,” Jeff said on the Reel Talker podcast. “I’d be working with her if she wasn’t my wife, but luckily she is my wife. The opportunity to do something creative where we’re both fulfilled—how rare is that?”

2022: Their Final Film Together

In 2022, the couple worked on their final film together, Spin Me Round. Over the course of their 14-year relationship, they had also collaborated on The Little Hours, and Aubrey appeared in Jeff’s 2016 film Joshy. Tragically, Jeff passed away suddenly in 2025 at the age of 47.
