Liverpool's Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday is set to proceed as scheduled, despite heavy snowfall across northern England.
Initially, there were concerns about a potential postponement, but after two safety meetings to evaluate weather and travel conditions, Liverpool confirmed that the match will go ahead.
While the pitch at Anfield remained playable thanks to undersoil heating, the Safety Advisory Group, which includes Liverpool City Council and emergency services, had considered postponing the game due to the disruption of local roads and concerns for the safety of traveling supporters.
The snowstorm also caused closures at both Liverpool and Manchester Airports, and services at Liverpool Lime Street station — the city's main railway hub — were suspended until at least midday due to the weather conditions.
"Today's fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions," Liverpool said in an official statement.
"We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you're traveling to Anfield, please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there."
Had the match been postponed, Liverpool would have faced potential fixture congestion, especially following the postponement of last month's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park due to high winds from Storm Darragh.
Arne Slot's side will also begin a two-legged Carabao Cup semifinal against Tottenham this week and are set to face Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third round at Anfield next Saturday. In addition, Liverpool sit atop the Champions League group and are assured of a place in the competition's later stages.
