Hollywood's biggest stars came together for the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, marking the official start of the awards season. The event celebrated significant achievements in both television and film, featuring a fresh new host and unforgettable fashion moments. A-list stars like Timothée Chalamet, Melissa McCarthy, Dakota Fanning, Zendaya, and Elton John brought their A-game, while Vin Diesel even shared a moment with Dwayne Johnson.
Here are the key highlights from the ceremony:
‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Brutalist’ Shine at the Film Awards
Netflix's unconventional Spanish-language musical crime drama Emilia Pérez was a standout, sweeping up four wins after earning 10 nominations, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. The film's success was met with great enthusiasm by the Beverly Hilton audience. The Brutalist, another unconventional favorite, also triumphed with three wins, including Best Motion Picture — Drama. The movie's 3-hour, 35-minute runtime, featuring a rare intermission, contributed to its unique presence at the ceremony. Both films were well-received at film festivals and now stand as major contenders for future accolades.
TV Winners Mirror the Emmys
If you watched the 2024 Emmy Awards in September, many of the same names emerged victorious at the Golden Globes. Hacks, Baby Reindeer, and Shōgun took home top awards in both ceremonies. Several acting winners were also repeat honorees, including Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jodie Foster, Jessica Gunning, Jeremy Allen White, and Jean Smart. However, the categories differ slightly between the Golden Globes and the Emmys. For example, Jessica Gunning’s win at the Golden Globes for Best Supporting Female Actor on TV covered all genres, while at the Emmys, she took home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Baby Reindeer. One significant difference was Colin Farrell's Golden Globe win for Best Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie for The Penguin, which didn’t air in time for the Emmys.
The Oscars Race Takes Shape
As the first major awards show leading up to the Oscars, the Golden Globe winners offered surprising twists. Zoe Saldaña, Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, and Adrien Brody emerged as frontrunners, delivering emotional speeches, with Culkin bringing his signature humor. There were some notable snubs as well. Angelina Jolie, favored to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama, lost to Fernanda Torres. The critically acclaimed Anora was shut out completely, while Wicked took home a single award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The much-anticipated The Wild Robot lost Best Animated Motion Picture to the dialogue-free Latvian film Flow.
