At the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, two standout productions received top honors: The Brutalist, a historical epic about the post-war immigrant experience, and Emilia Pérez, a musical about a drug lord undergoing gender-affirming surgery. Emilia Pérez led the night with four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, while The Brutalist claimed the Best Motion Picture – Drama prize, with three wins overall.

The television categories were dominated by Shōgun, a grand historical drama set in feudal Japan, which won four awards, including Best TV Drama. Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd’s semi-autobiographical series about dealing with a stalker, took home Best Limited Series, Anthology, or TV Movie, alongside another win. Hacks, a series about a stand-up legend and her protégé, secured Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy, with Jean Smart earning Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her role.

Adrien Brody, the lead in The Brutalist portraying a Holocaust survivor turned architect, was named Best Actor in a Drama. Brady Corbet, the film's director, won Best Director. Brody emotionally compared his character’s immigrant journey to that of his Hungarian mother, expressing gratitude for the strength of immigrants. In a surprise win, Fernanda Torres claimed Best Actress in a Drama for her role in I’m Still Here, a harrowing portrayal of a woman whose husband is disappeared by the police in Brazil during its military dictatorship.

Demi Moore won Best Actress in a Comedy for her performance in The Substance, playing a middle-aged actress who turns to black market drugs to stay youthful. This marked a return to awards for Moore, who shared a story of being dismissed as just a "popcorn actress" in her early career. Sebastian Stan took home Best Actor in a Comedy for his role in A Different Man, portraying a performer with neurofibromatosis who undergoes a drastic procedure to alter his appearance. He also emphasized the need to address society’s discomfort with disability.

Hiroyuki Sanada was named Best Actor in a TV Drama for Shōgun, and his co-star Anna Sawai was awarded Best Actress in a TV Drama. Colin Farrell, known for his role in The Penguin, won Best Actor in a Limited Series, while Jodie Foster took home Best Actress in a Limited Series for True Detective: North Country. Kieran Culkin earned Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, and Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez.

Comedian and actress Nikki Glaser hosted the ceremony, delivering sharp humor on various Hollywood topics, including the state of the industry, celebrity politics, and current cultural trends. Glaser’s wit also poked fun at A-listers and their awards, making pointed remarks about the challenges faced by the industry.

In addition to its film and TV categories, the Golden Globes introduced new honors like Best Stand-Up Special, awarded to Ali Wong for Single Lady, and Best Box Office Achievement, which went to Wicked. Director Jon M. Chu praised the film’s message of optimism in an era of cynicism.
