Starbucks workers and allies strike and picket on Nov. 16, 2023, in Seattle.Love Starbucks holiday drinks? You may not be able to get them this week.
Starbucks Workers United has announced that baristas will go on strike starting Friday in three major cities: Seattle, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
The union said the strike is a response to Starbucks' "failure to bring viable economic proposals to the bargaining table" and to address hundreds of unresolved unfair labor practice charges.
Representing over 500 unionized stores and more than 10,500 workers, the union is pushing for changes. Starbucks operates nearly 10,000 company-owned U.S. locations, according to The Associated Press.
“Since February, Starbucks has repeatedly promised to reach contracts by the end of the year, but they have yet to present a serious economic proposal,” the union stated on X. “This week, just weeks before the deadline, Starbucks proposed no immediate wage increase for union baristas, and only a 1.5% wage increase in future years.” Starting Friday, baristas will begin five days of escalating strikes, potentially expanding to other cities by Christmas Eve, unless Starbucks agrees to work towards a fair framework.
Starbucks, based in Seattle, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This strike follows an announcement by the Teamsters union on Thursday of strikes at several Amazon delivery facilities during the busy holiday shopping period.
