Suspected jihadists killed 39 civilians, including women and children, in two separate attacks in the conflict-ridden borderlands of western Niger in recent days, according to the country’s defense ministry on Sunday.
The attacks targeted the communities of Kokorou and Libiri, though the ministry did not specify the exact dates of the violence.
Niger, along with its Sahel region neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, remains at the forefront of efforts to combat a growing insurgent threat that began in 2012 when al-Qaeda-linked militants first took control of territory in Mali.
